A 49-year-old Arnold man was arrested for suspicion of driving while intoxicated after he crashed an SUV he was driving into the median on eastbound I-44 near Hwy. 109, Eureka Police reported.
Officers at about 1:45 p.m. Aug. 30 were patrolling the interstate and saw the 2020 GMC Terrain facing oncoming traffic on I-44 after the accident. The man was standing next to the SUV when police arrived, and he told officers the only thing he remembered was a loud popping sound then the Terrain spinning before hitting the median, the report said.
The man was evaluated by emergency medical service personnel. After being evaluated, the man asked officers to look for his phone in the SUV, so he could provide insurance information, according to the report.
When officers searched the SUV, they allegedly found empty alcohol bottles. When they asked the man how much alcohol he had drank, the man said he drank a Bloody Mary while having lunch with his son in Rolla earlier that day, the report said.
The man failed field sobriety tests and was arrested and taken to the Police Station, according to the report.
At the Police Station, the man allegedly told officers he drank several alcoholic beverages while driving to Rolla from Arnold. He also said he started drinking at about 10 a.m. that day, the report said.
The man allegedly registered a .113 percent blood-alcohol content, according to the report. In Missouri, .08 percent is the legal limit.
Eureka Police also learned the man had at least two prior DWI convictions, the report said.
Eureka Police will seek a charge against the man through the St. Louis County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office for felony, Lt. Brett Grittini said.
