man in handcuffs

Eureka Police arrested a 37-year-old Arnold man for alleged possession of what appeared to be illegal drugs. Officers were called to check on the man because he appeared to be asleep in an SUV in the Walmart parking lot, 131 Eureka Towne Center Drive, police reported.

Officers responded to the parking lot at about 9:30 p.m. June 8 and saw the man slumped in the driver’s side seat of the 2016 Chevrolet Equinox. After officers woke up the man, he appeared disoriented, and he said he didn’t know where his driver’s license was. An officer pointed out that a wallet with what appeared to be a license was on the passenger’s seat next to a set of keys, and the man picked up the wallet but continued to look around the SUV for his license, the report said.

An officer told the man the license was in the wallet, and the man stopped looking and gave the officer the license. Officers checked the license in a database and learned the man was wanted on a warrant from the Sunset Hills Police Department and was on probation for a drug violation, Eureka Police reported.

The officers arrested the man and searched the SUV. One officer allegedly found a case in the SUV that contained five syringes, a metal spoon with burn marks and a white crystal-like substance. The other officer searched the man's pocket and allegedly found 22 pills that contained a powder believed to be heroin, the report said.

The man was taken to the Police Station, where he was booked and released pending application for warrants. He was then driven to his home in Arnold because the Sunset Hills Police Department was unable to pick him up, according to the report.

Depending on results of the drug analysis, Eureka Police will seek charges against the man through the St. Louis County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office for possession of a controlled substance and possession of drug paraphernalia, Lt. Michael Werges said.
