Northwest High Senior Citizen Prom

Barbara Boyer of Festus and Charlie Baechle of Oakville have fun dancing at the 2016 Northwest High Senior Citizen Prom.

Those 55 and older will have the chance to dance the night away on Saturday, May 7, at the Northwest High School Senior Citizen’s Prom.

The event, which also will include dinner, will be from 5:30-8:30 p.m. in the high school cafeteria, 6005 Cedar Hill Road, in Cedar Hill.

The event is free, but senior citizens who plan to attend must RSVP by May 2.

“A lot of younger people bring their parents or their grandparents,” Northwest High School teacher and Student Council adviser Lana Romaine said.

She said the event is not a formal one.

“I like for (the seniors) to dress like they are going to church or a dressy afternoon tea,” she said. “Long dresses are not necessary, just something nice.”

Romaine said she believes the event had been held for at least 15 years before it was canceled in 2020 and 2021 due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

“We had just not felt it was safe (for the past two years),” she said.

Romaine said she’s glad to see the popular event return.

“It’s important to have the event for people who might have missed their high school prom. Years ago, a lot of people didn’t go to their prom. They couldn’t afford it, or maybe they had dropped out of school so they didn’t go. A lot of guys had gone to the military as soon as they turned 18 and they didn’t stick around (for the prom).”

Romaine said dinner will be catered by Pomodoro’s Pasta and Subs in Arnold.

“It’s a full Italian dinner,” she said. “The (high school) kids and staff make all of the desserts.” She said some desserts will be diabetic-friendly.

The event will have a DJ, and a prom king and queen will be crowned.

Romaine said the Student Council plans and runs the event.

People may RSVP by calling 636-274-0555, ext. 18148 and leaving a voicemail with their name, phone number and number of people in the party. Or the information may be emailed to Romaine at lromaine@northwestschools.net.
