A capybara family has been pictured eating pumpkins filled with snacks as a Halloween treat.

Staff at Edinburgh Zoo provided the giant rodent family with pumpkins, squash, carrots and bamboo leaves as part of a series of treats in the run-up to Halloween.

Bru was the first capybara pup to be born in Scotland in 18 years, and keepers are excited to celebrate his first Halloween.

Mom Luna and dad Rodney were spotted nibbling on the pumpkin, as her pup watched on.

The pup's name was chosen by the public - with the suggestion coming from the fact that newborn capybara pups weigh 1.5-2.5 kg, roughly the same as a six-pack of Irn-Bru.

Jonny Appleyard, animal keeper, said: "We are so proud of Luna and Rodney, they're already doing an incredible job of looking after their new baby.

"They are such a beautiful species and the babies are especially adorable!"

Capybaras are native to South America, and are the world's largest rodents - weighing between 35-65 kg.

They are also capable of swimming underwater for up to five minutes, as well as running at speeds of up to 22 mph.
