Hillsboro R-3 mourns loss of school board member Jon Schuessler

Schuessler, Jon

Jon Schuessler, a Hillsboro Board of Education member, died Oct. 30 after a long battle with cancer.

Schuessler, 48, of Hillsboro was a school board member since 2019 and was serving the final year of his second three-year term, which will be up for election in April.

“The passing of Mr. Schuessler leaves a profound absence on the board that will be difficult to fill,” said John Linhorst, the board president. “As a steadfast advocate for both the community’s voice and our curriculum, he will be remembered for his thoughtful contributions to district strategy and his commitment to championing all students, regardless of background. His dedication to our community and our students has made a lasting impact that will continue to inspire the leadership of the Hillsboro R-3 district now and into the future.”

Hillsboro R-3 Superintendent Jon Isaacson echoed Linhorst’s sentiments.

“Mr. Jon Schuessler was a valued and integral member of our Hillsboro R-3 School District board,” Isaacson said. “Mr. Schuessler’s commitment to our schools and community was steadfast. Despite a two-year battle with cancer, he continued to attend board and committee meetings, demonstrating his dedication to our district and community.

“A remarkable example of this dedication occurred (the week of Oct. 21) when, from his hospital room, Mr. Schuessler reviewed applications and student essays and worked with (board member) Beth Petry to select the student to represent the Hillsboro District as a nominee for the MSBA (Missouri School Board Association) John T. Belcher Scholarship.”

Isaacson said Schuessler contributed to numerous district accomplishments during his time on the board.

“Significant milestones, including the acquisition of Bridle Ridge Acres and the expansion of Career and Technical Education programs, marked his leadership on the Hillsboro R-3 School District board,” he said. “His leadership and commitment to enhancing educational opportunities have provided Hillsboro students with broader pathways to future careers.

“As a board member, his thoughtful questions, contributions and leadership have left a lasting impact on our district, and he will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing and working with him.”

A lifelong Hillsboro resident and a 1994 Hillsboro High School graduate, Schuessler earned a bachelor’s degree from Missouri University of Science and Engineering (formerly the University of Missouri-Rolla). He listed his occupation as private tutor.

Isaacson said board members will decide whether to fill Schuessler’s open seat before the April election or leave it open and operate with the six remaining board members until the election for the new three-year term.
