relay for life

The Relay for Life of Jefferson County, a fundraiser for the American Cancer Society, has been rescheduled for 2 p.m. to midnight Saturday, June 10, at the Fox High School track, 751 Jeffco Blvd., in Arnold.

As of Monday, 30 teams had signed up to participate and the event had raised $46,530.46 toward the $70,000 goal.

The relay, originally scheduled for May 6, was postponed due to flooding in the area and wet conditions at the school grounds.

This year’s Relay for Life of Jefferson County brings together in one event three relays that were held annually in House Springs, Festus and Arnold. Teams raise money and team members walk the track during the event.

Organizers planned a variety of special activities, ceremonies, entertainment and lap themes that focus on the overall Relay for Life of Jefferson County’s theme – “Cancer never takes a holiday.” Throughout the relay, some laps have holiday themes including New Year’s, July 4, Valentine’s Day, Easter, Christmas and Thanksgiving.

Liza Brownfield, one of the event organizers, said planners scrambled to reschedule activities and entertainment for the new date.

The relay’s opening ceremony is set for 2:30 p.m., followed by a survivor lap at 3 p.m. and a caregiver lap at 3:15 p.m.

The luminaria ceremony will be held at 9 p.m., featuring Jessie’s Divas, a group of singers and dancers under the direction of Jessie Kohut.

A new event – a canned food drive – has been added to the lineup.

“In the past, we put wooden blocks in the luminaria bags to hold the candles,” Brownfield said. “This year, we’re asking teams to put cans in their bags. We will donate the cans to the Arnold Food Pantry after the event.”

Activities include yard Jenga, a frozen T-shirt contest, a Hungry Hungry Hippos game, an Easter Egg hunt, a box car derby and a scavenger hunt.

Entertainment is planned starting at 2 p.m. when the bounce house opens.

Rumours Band will play from 4:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. A balloon artist will be at the event.

In addition, dancers from Dynamic Edge Dance Center will perform at 8 p.m.
