You can hold onto your money for a bit longer if you intend to park along public streets near the Jefferson County Courthouse in Hillsboro.
Hillsboro City Administrator Gery Marmaduke said the installation of a parking meter system that was to have started in mid-April has been delayed while the vendor waits for the equipment to arrive.
“We received a call from the Baker Group saying they had not received (the materials for the system) yet,” Marmaduke said on Thursday (May 8). “They do not yet know when they will receive the equipment. When they get a confirmed shipment date, they will let us know.”
The Hillsboro Board of Aldermen decided in August 2012 to contract with Baker Group of Des Moines to install a parking meter system.
Plans call for 106 metered spaces on the north row of the courthouse parking lot and along portions of Main, Maple, First and Locust streets. The system will use computerized pay kiosks, with the driver entering the number of his or her space into a pay station for a designated amount of time.
Aldermen set parking fees at 75 cents per hour, with no time limit on the length of time a vehicle could occupy a space. Payment may be made with coins, credit or debit cards or bills in $1 or $5 denominations.
A driver who wishes to park in a metered space for 20 minutes may do so for a quarter.
Officials say the city will use electronic message boards to alert drivers when the system will be activated.
