Spirit Strides is trying to raise funds to put a roof over its horse arena, and a fundraiser set for April 10 hopefully will get the non-profit organization closer to its goal, said Brenda Gilliam, the group’s founder.
Spirit Strides is a non-profit therapeutic horse-riding program in Dittmer.
“We deal with (clients who have) physical, emotional, social and mental challenges,” Gilliam said.
The upcoming fundraiser is a clay shooting contest, to be held at Top Gun Sportsman’s Club, 4273 Hwy. 47, in Lonedell.
Participation in the event costs $90, and the event is still looking for shooting station sponsors for $200 and golf cart sponsors for $50.
Gilliam said prizes will be given to the top shooters.
She said the event also will include doughnuts and coffee in the morning. Participants will be able to use golf carts to ride to the 10 shooting stations. In addition, lunch will be included. The lunch is sponsored by Servpro in Fenton and will be catered by Frankie Gianino’s Grill and Bar in Imperial.
Gilliam said the event also will include an auction with numerous items up for bid, including gift cards, Husky tools, massages, BBQ grill and Brighton jewelry.
Gilliam said a roof over the 60-by-100 foot arena would help the organization service more clients because it wouldn’t have to stop providing services when there’s rain or other bad weather. She said the roof will cost between $50,000 and $60,000.
“Currently, we have $5,500 and that was from our last fundraiser,” she said March 11.
Gilliam said she knows it will take several fundraisers to reach the goal.
