A Seckman High School student was hit by a bus during dismissal Wednesday afternoon, May 21, at the Imperial school. The accident happened at about 2 p.m. in the bus lane near the high school building, Fox C-6 School District officials reported.
The Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office reported that two buses were stopped near the school, and the bus that hit the girl was traveling alongside those two buses. The report said the girl ran out between the two buses into the path of the bus traveling past.
The woman who was driving the bus that hit the girl said she was unable to stop in time. The girl’s foot was trapped under the driver’s side tire of the bus, which had to be pulled forward to free the girl, the report said.
The girl sustained a serious injury to her foot, and she was transported to an area hospital, the Sheriff’s Office reported.
An update on the girls condition was not available this morning, May 22.
Seckman High Principal Jeff Krutzsch sent three messages to families and staff after the accident.
“During dismissal this afternoon, a student was struck by a school bus as the bus was leaving campus,” he said in one of the messages. “Emergency services arrived at the scene shortly after and provided care to the student and subsequently transported the student off campus to receive medical attention.”
Krutzsch said in the message that the family of the student struck by the bus was told about the incident, and families of students on the bus also were contacted. He also said no one on the bus was injured.
“While no students aboard the bus were injured, it is possible that your student witnessed this incident and will want to discuss it with you,” he said.
Counselors were available at the high school for those affected by the accident, Krutzsch said.
“The well-being and safety of our students and staff is always our top priority,” he said in a message.
Fox C-6 officials said the Sheriff’s Office and Fox C-6 Transportation Department staff are investigating the incident.
