Eureka Police took 31 children from 10 area families shopping during its Shop with a Cop program, Chief Michael Wiegand said.
He said officers took the children shopping Dec. 13-15 at the Eureka Walmart, 131 Eureka Towne Center Drive.
He said $7,900 has been raised so far this year.
“It’s always great to get them at the store and start seeing their faces when you take them down to the toy aisle to see what they pick out,” Wiegand said.
He said each child was given $100 to spend on gifts and toys and another $100 for clothing.
Each family also received a holiday dinner, which included a turkey.
Wiegand said Culver’s donates meals for the officers and families to enjoy together after the shopping trip.
“By interacting with them and getting them out into the store to shop and talking and you have a meal with them, they have a totally different attitude and totally different outlook on what the police do in the communities,” he said.
Wiegand said most of the fundraising for the program comes from Chuck Maher, founder of the Eureka Police Support Fund.
Wiegand said each family also got a free pass into Santa’s Magical Kingdom, which operates in Yogi Bear’s Jellystone Park, 5300 S. Old Fox Creek Road, in Pacific.
