Voters in the Selma Village Sewer District overwhelmingly approved a $2.5 million bond issue in the Aug. 4 election.
The proposition passed with 181 “yes” votes (84.98 percent) to 32 “no” votes (15.02 percent), according to complete, but unofficial election results. The measure needed a four-sevenths (57.14 percent) majority to pass.
The district is located south of Festus.
Todd Kilgore, the sewer district’s secretary-treasurer and a member of its governing board, issued the following written statement after the election results were posted: “We are grateful to the voters of the Selma Village Sewer District for approving this important ballot proposition. This decision allows the district to move forward with the required wastewater improvements, pursue low-interest funding and grant opportunities and continue protecting reliable local service while managing costs as responsibly as possible.”
Prior to the election, Kilgore said no tax increase was tied to the bond issue and the funds generated from it “will go directly toward operational upkeep and structural upgrades. This ensures our system remains in full compliance with environmental regulations, preventing costly regulatory fines and protecting our local water supply.”
