Ballot box

After filings closed Tuesday for the Aug. 5 primary election, there were three-way races for both the Democratic and Republican nominations for Jefferson County executive, with Samuel J. Rauls of Hillsboro, Gary Stout II of Festus and Bob Schott of Pevely on the Democratic side, and incumbent Ken Waller of Herculaneum, Mark Paul of Imperial and Chris “Borgy” Borgerson of Festus on the Republican side.

In addition, Constitution Party candidate J. Bennett of Cedar Hill has filed for his party’s nomination for county executive.

The primary races for county executive are among 32 that had formed by the end of filings, which opened Feb. 25.

The Republican nomination for the District 7 seat (Cedar Hill area) on the Jefferson County Council drew the most interest, with five candidates filing.

There also will be races for both nominations for the District 3 seat (Arnold area) on the Jefferson County Council, and for the Republican nomination for the District 1 seat (High Ridge area).

In addition, there are crowded races for the Republican nomination for the District 3 Congressional seat and for the Republican nomination for the District 112 state representative seat (Barnhart area).

Voters will even see races for seats on the Central Committees, with most of those on the Republican side.

Many candidates without races for the primary will face challengers in the Nov. 4 general election.

A list of other primary filings as of Tuesday follows. Incumbents are denoted with an (I).

County Council

■ District 1 – Democrat Danny Tuggle of Eureka, Republicans Don Bickowski of Eureka (I), Jack E. Davis of High Ridge.

■ District 3 – Democrats Mike Evans, Charles Huey, both of Arnold, Republicans Bob Boyer of Arnold (I), Phil Hendrickson of Arnold.

■ District 5 – Democrat Oscar James (Jim) Kasten of Herculaneum, Republican Jim Muellersman of Festus.

■ District 7 – Democrat Mike Davis of Cedar Hill, Republicans Steven J. Bergner of Hillsboro, Jim Terry of House Springs, Charles D. Bennett of Hillsboro, Dan D. McCarthy of Hillsboro and Victoria Goad James of Cedar Hill.

Terms for County Council are for four-year terms, and the salary for a County Council member in 2015 will be $10,710.

Judges

■ Div. 2 circuit judge – Republican Darrell Missey of Fenton (the current Div. 10 associate circuit judge).

■ Div. 10 associate circuit judge – Democrats John S. Appelbaum of Imperial and Joe Rathert of High Ridge, Republican Jeffrey Coleman of Arnold.

■ Div. 11 associate circuit judge – Democrat Ray Dickhaner of Arnold (I), Republican Brenda Stacey of Arnold.

■ Div. 12 associate circuit judge – Democrat Stephen D. Bouchard of Crystal City (I), Republican Antonio “Tony” Manansala of Dittmer.

■ Div. 13 associate circuit judge – Democrat Patricia Ann Riehl of Fenton (I), Republican Victor Melenbrink of Arnold.

■ Div. 14 associate circuit judge – Democrat Tim Miller of Festus (I).

■ Div. 15 associate circuit judge – Democrat Shannon R. Dougherty of Dittmer (I).

The salary for associate circuit judge is $116,858, while the circuit judge position pays $127,020.

Terms for circuit judges are six years, while an associate circuit judge serves four years.

State senate and state representatives

■ State Senate District 22 – Democrat Jeff Roorda of Barnhart (the current District 113 state representative), Republican Paul Wieland of Imperial (the current District 112 state representative).

■ State representative District 97 – Democrat Tom Dohack of Arnold, Republican John McCaherty of High Ridge (I).

■ District 111 – Democrat Michael Frame of Eureka (I), Republicans Shane Roden of Cedar Hill and Jason Jarvis of Imperial..

■ District 112 – Democrats Larry D. Steinkamp and Robert W. Butler, both of Barnhart, Republicans Rob Vescovo of Arnold, Charles Groeteke of Barnhart and Avery Fortenberry of Barnhart.

■ District 113 – Democrats Sean Fauss and Krystal Hargis, both of Arnold; Republicans Jason Fulbright of Arnold and Dan Shaul of Imperial, and Constitution Party candidate Donna Ivanovich of Arnold.

■ District 118 – Democrat Ben Harris of Hillsboro (I), Republican Michael P. McGirl of Potosi.

The pay for a Missouri state representative or senator is $35,915 per year, a weekly allowance for miles traveled going to and returning from meetings and expenses for each day the General Assembly is in session.

State representatives serve two-year terms; state senators serve four years.

Jefferson County offices (four-year terms)

■ Recorder of Deeds – Democrat Mike Bone of De Soto, Republicans Debbie Dunnegan of Hillsboro (I), Sam Goodrum of Imperial.

■ County clerk – Democrat Wes Wagner of De Soto (I), Republican Jeremy A. Day of Imperial, Constitution Party candidate Terence G. McCarthy of Hillsboro.

■ Collector of revenue – Democrat Beth Mahn of Hillsboro (I), Republican Leslie Hanson of High Ridge, Constitution Party candidate Lawrence Lott of Hillsboro.

■ Auditor – Democrat Dorothy Stafford of Festus (I), Republican Richard Carter III of Hillsboro.

Salaries for most county officeholders, including the county executive, will be $79,169 next year. The salaries are different, however, for the circuit clerk and prosecuting attorney, which are under the jurisdiction of the state of Missouri.

■ Circuit clerk – Democrat Jeanette McKee of Hillsboro, Republicans Mike Reuter of Imperial and Kirk M. Biehle of Festus. (Salary, $69,000).

■ Prosecuting attorney – Democrat Forrest Wegge of Arnold (I). (Salary, $116,858).
