Denim quilt

Comfort Quilts of Festus will hold a fundraising yard sale starting at 8 a.m. Saturday, May 21, at 400 West Second St. in Pevely.

Proceeds from the yard sale will benefit the group, which will use the money to buy materials and supplies for volunteers to make handmade quilts to donate to foster children and homeless veterans in the Jefferson County and surrounding area.

Carolyn Dopp, president of the Comfort Quilts group, said it has been operating for about three years.

She said she has noticed a higher demand for quilts over the past couple of years. At the same time, the group has received fewer donations of fabrics needed to make the quilts.

“We haven’t gotten many donations here lately and we’re really hurting for them,” Dopp said. “We take denim, flannel, corduroy, khaki, and I also take bed sheets.”

She said the group also would accept donations of sewing machines, batting and thread.

Dopp said the largest increase in demand for quilts has come from the foster care system. She said a Christmas party is held every year for foster children, and each child at the party gets to pick out a handmade quilt.

She said there are more than 700 foster children in Jefferson County, and so far the group has made about 300 quilts.

Dopp said the group also needs volunteers to help make the quilts.

She said donations will be accepted at the May 21 yard sale. Or, donors may make arrangements to drop off donations by emailing comfortquiltz@yahoo.com or by calling Dopp at 636-725-8138.
