Developmental Disability Advocates officials are seeking a special-use permit to build a group home on property at 1615 Vine School Road in Herculaneum.

The agency owns two lots for a total of 5 acres at the Herculaneum site and wants to build a home that would accommodate up to four people, said Dave Weiler, director of administration.

He said plans call for the home to be built on approximately 1 acre of its 3.2-acre lot. The agency’s other lot is about 1.8 acres.

The structure would be between 2,000 and 2,500 square feet, and the agency has budgeted about $400,000 for the project, Weiler said.

Stacey Ismail, the Developmental Disability Advocates executive, said the agency already has an office on the lot.

“The property is already zoned commercial, but we have to get a special-use permit for what we want to do,” she said.

Ismail said she hopes to see the Herculaneum group home ready for occupancy in about a year.

“We’d like to see it open by the spring of 2023,” she said.

The city of Herculaneum will hold a public hearing about the request at 6 p.m. Monday, April 11, at Herculaneum City Hall, 1 Parkwood Court.

Ismail said Developmental Disability Advocates opened a group home in Barnhart in 2019.

“At the Barnhart home, three brothers live there,” she said.

She said those who live in the agency’s group homes do not necessarily need to be related.

The agency, formerly known as the Jefferson County Developmental Disabilities Resource Board, provides resources “to create opportunities for individuals with developmental disabilities in Jefferson County to live full and enriched lives,” according to its website.

It is considered a quasi-governmental entity that receives property tax funding.
