Crystal City, Festus forming committee to study potential merger of fire departments

The possibility of merging the Crystal City and Festus fire departments will be the focus of a joint committee the cities will form, according to a written statement released today, Sept. 30.

According to the statement issued on behalf of the cities, the committee will include the mayors, city administrators, fire chiefs and one council member from each city.

“The committee will review response capabilities, staffing, equipment, facilities, costs and how a merger could affect residents and firefighters in both communities. It will also consider other ways the departments might work together. Any proposal will require careful review and action by both cities,” the statement said.

The statement stressed that no decision has been made regarding a possible merger of fire departments.

The cities will provide updates on the committee’s progress and will schedule public meetings and open houses at future dates, the statement said.
