Back to school

If you’re looking to save a little money on clothes and other supplies your children need before school starts, you might want to stock up during the first weekend of August.

The 2023 Missouri Back-to-School Sales Tax Holiday begins at 12:01 a.m. Friday, Aug. 4, and runs through Sunday, Aug. 6.

During the holiday, the state and municipalities will not collect sales tax on school-related purchases.

This is the first year municipalities are not allowed to opt out of the sales tax holiday, according to the Missouri Department of Revenue. A state law went into effect on Jan. 1 that exempts all state and local sales or use taxes during the sales tax holiday.

Sales tax will not be charged on any article of clothing that costs $100 or less; school supplies up to $50 per purchase; computer software that costs $350 or less; personal computers that cost up to $1,500; and graphing calculators that cost up to $150.
