fatal traffic accident

A French Village man died following a two-vehicle accident on Thursday afternoon, July 6, in St. Francois County that also left six Barnhart residents, including three juveniles, injured, the Missouri State Highway Patrol reported.

At 12:10 p.m., Wyatt A. Vangundy, 26, of French Village was driving a 2012 Honda CRV east on Hwy. Y west of Critter Lane Road and failed to negotiate a curve, and the SUV crossed into the westbound lane, where the front left side of the SUV struck the front left side of a 2019 Honda Odyssey minivan driven by Margaret A. Lambay, 69, of Barnhart. The impact caused the SUV to run off the south side of the road, and the minivan ran off the north side of the road, the report said.

Vangundy was taken by ambulance to Parkland Health Center in Bonne Terre, where he was pronounced dead at 1:24 p.m., the report said.

Lambay was seriously injured, as was a 14-year-old boy who was one of five passengers in the minivan. All the passengers are from Barnhart, according to the report.

Lambay was taken by Air Evac helicopter to Mercy Hospital St. Louis in Creve Coeur, where she was listed in satisfactory condition today, July 7, a Mercy spokesman said.

The boy was taken by ambulance to Mercy Hospital Jefferson in Crystal City.

Sameer M. Lambay, 47, was moderately injured, and three other passengers sustained minor injuries – a 7-year-old girl, a 13-year-old boy and Abdul K. Lambay, 73. All four of those passengers were taken by ambulance to Mercy Hospital Jefferson.

Sameer and Abdul Lambay were treated and released, a Mercy spokesman said.

No information about the children’s conditions was available.

Vangundy and the 7-year-old girl were not wearing seat belts, and all the others involved in the accident were wearing them, the patrol reported.

Both vehicles were totaled, the report said.

The highway patrol did not release the names of the juveniles.
