Woman crashes Corvette into Eureka Old Town building

A woman lost control of her 2003 red Chevrolet Corvette, slamming into an unoccupied building at 12 Dreyer Avenue on March 22.

A Eureka woman was moderately injured and was transported to an area hospital after crashing into an unoccupied building in Eureka Old Town on March 22, Eureka Police Capt. Michael Werges said.

He said the 71-year-old woman was making a right turn from South Central Avenue onto Dreyer Avenue when she lost control of her 2003 Chevrolet Corvette, jumping the curb near the Shelter Insurance building at 207 South Central Avenue and slamming into the side of the building at 12 Dreyer Avenue. The building was once an automotive shop.

Werges said Eureka Police Department officers arrived on the scene at 3:34 p.m.

“When we talked to her, she said she didn’t know what happened, her car just took off,” he said. “When she was being checked by paramedics, officers looked in the car. They noticed she didn’t have her shoe on. Her flip-flop was stuck, wedged under the pedal.

“We’re not exactly sure how that all happened, but it was very quick.”

Werges said no one else was injured. The building sustained some damage to a cinder block wall but is still habitable, he said.

The woman was treated for her injuries and released from the hospital, Werges said.

The Corvette is not drivable, he said.

“Luckily, there were no severe injuries,” Werges said. “Central (Avenue) is right there, and that’s a really busy time of day.”
