Two women were injured, one of then seriously, on Thursday night, March 10, in a two-vehicle accident on I-55 south of Meramec Bottom Road north of Arnold, the Missouri State Highway Patrol reported.

The accident happened at about 8:48 p.m. when Virgie L. Chaffen, 47, of Memphis, Tenn., was driving a 2006 Lexus GX4 south on the interstate and struck the rear of a 2014 Hyundai Elantra that was stopped ahead. The impact caused the SUV to overturn, the report said.

Heather A. Culley, 29, of St. Louis, who was driving the Elantra, was seriously injured, and Chaffen was moderately injured.

The two women were transported by Mehlville Fire to Mercy Hospital South in south St. Louis County, where Chaffen was treated and released and Culley was listed in critical condition on Friday, March 11, a hospital spokesman said.

Both women were wearing seat belts, the report said.

The two vehicles were totaled, according to the report.
