Two Jefferson County teenagers were hurt in a one-car accident Thursday afternoon (March 24) at Oakvale Road and Lantern Light Trail southeast of De Soto, the Missouri State Highway Patrol reports.

At 2:55 p.m., Nicholas E. South, 17, of Festus was driving a 2000 Chevrolet Monte Carlo east on Oakville Road, and the car ran off the left side of the road before South overcorrected and the car ran off the right side of the road, where it struck a tree and overturned and then ran off the left side of the road, the report said.

South was seriously hurt and taken by helicopter to Mercy Hospital St. Louis in Creve Coeur, according to the report.

However, the hospital had no information about him this afternoon (March 25), a hospital spokeswoman said.

A passenger in the car, Mark S. Smith, 16, of De Soto, sustained minor injuries and was taken by Joachim-Plattin Ambulance to Mercy Hospital Jefferson in Crystal City, the report said.

But, that hospital had no formation about him, a hospital spokesman said.

Smith was wearing a seat belt, but South was not wearing one, the patrol report said.

The car was totaled, the report said.
