Three people were injured on Aug. 29 after the roof of a Eureka building under construction collapsed.

Eureka Fire Protection District personnel arrived at the construction site at 1400 South Outer Road at 2:08 p.m. to find the roof trusses collapsed inside the partially constructed concrete building, Chief Scott Barthelmass said.

Barthelmass said the building is part of property owned by Midwest Motors, a used car dealership.

He said one man on the site suffered serious injuries, and two people suffered minor injuries due to the collapse.

“The original report was that there were people trapped under the collapse,” Barthelmass said. “There was no one trapped. Our firefighters provided immediate care to the injured and transported one (worker) to Mercy Hospital St. Louis.”

An update on the person’s condition was not available as of Tuesday, Sept. 2.

Barthelmass estimated about 10-15 workers were on the scene when the roof trusses collapsed. The cause for the “catastrophic failure” of the truss system is currently undetermined, he said.
