Festus Police recently arrested a 21-year-old O’Fallon man for suspicion of driving while intoxicated after he crashed into a utility pole in the 800 block of North Fifth Street near the Festus Public Works building. The passenger in the vehicle was injured, and the utility pole was broken, Police Chief Doug Wendel said.

He said the incident occurred at about 5 a.m. May 13 when the man was driving a 2013 Nissan Juke west on North Fifth Street and ran off the right side of the road, where the SUV struck the pole.

The driver was not injured. However, a 23-year-old Cedar Hill man who was riding in the SUV was taken by Joachim-Plattin Ambulance to an area hospital with what turned out to be minor injuries. He was treated and released, Wendel said.

The Juke appeared to be totaled, and both the driver and passenger were wearing seat belts, he said.

Wendel said he did not know if the crash affected any utility services.
