A Hillsboro man was killed and a St. Francois County man was hurt in a three-vehicle traffic accident Friday evening, May 26, on Hwy. E south of De Soto.
The Missouri State Highway Patrol reported that Jared Young, 20, of Hillsboro was driving a 2019 Ford Mustang north on Hwy. E at Belleville Lane at 9:30 p.m. when he attempted to pass a northbound 2010 Ford Explorer driven by John Schneidewind, 57, of De Soto, on a curve. Young then encountered a southbound 2016 Ford F450 driven by Brent Pogue, 47, of Bonne Terre, and the Mustang swerved to the right, and the front of the F450 hit the driver’s side of the Mustang. The Mustang went off the right side of the road and caught fire, and the F450 went off the left side of the road.
Young was taken by ARCH helicopter to Mercy Hospital St. Louis in Creve Coeur, where he was pronounced dead at 11:23 p.m., the report said.
The report made no mention of injury to Schneidewind, but Pogue suffered moderate injuries and he was taken by Joachim-Plattin Ambulance to Mercy Hospital Jefferson in Crystal City, the report said.
An update on his condition was not available.
Pogue and Schneidewind were wearing seat belts, according to the report, which said that it is unknown whether Young was.
The Mustang and the F450 were totaled in the crash, the report said, while the Explorer had minor damage.
