A tractor-trailer crashed into a median and caught on fire on westbound I-44 near Antire Road in Eureka early this morning, Sept. 21, Eureka Fire Protection District Chief Scott Barthelmass reported.
Barthelmass said Eureka Fire was called at about 12:05 a.m., and all westbound lanes and two eastbound lanes of the interstate were closed while firefighters put out the fire. He said all westbound lanes reopened at about 6:45 a.m.
Barthelmass said the first firetruck arrived at 12:12 a.m., and the scene was cleared at 3:51 a.m. He said the tractor-trailer’s driver and a passenger were not injured, and no firefighters were injured. The tractor-trailer was destroyed.
“It was raining last night, and the tractor-trailer was carrying auto parts,” Barthelmass said. “The tractor-trailer lost control, and it caught on fire.”
Eureka Fire was assisted by the Fenton, Vally Park, High Ridge and Metro West fire protection districts.
