During the week of Jan. 4, the Jefferson County Health Department conducted 31 inspections at food establishments. Scores ranged from 75 to 100. Some were routine inspections while others were reinspections where scores are not assigned. All inspections are unannounced visits.
Facilities considered low priority are not assigned a score. A low priority facility does not prepare food.
According to the Jefferson County Health Department, facilities start with a score of 100, and points are reduced based on observed violations:
■ Six points are deducted for priority violations that directly contribute to foodborne illness risk.
■ Three points are deducted for priority foundation violations that indirectly contribute to foodborne illness risk or enable priority violations.
■ One point for core violations related to general sanitation and good retail practices.
■ Two points for repeat violations of any type.
Dan Kane, environmental supervisor for the Health Department, said the agency does not have ranges for good or bad scores but instead looks at the overall score, adding that readers need to look at the types of violations.
He said a couple of priority violations are more concerning than several core violations.
In certain cases, the Health Department returns to a food establishment to reinspect, allowing time for the facility to correct issues. According to the Health Department, reinspection is not solely based on the score an establishment gets; it’s determined by the type of violation. Priority and priority foundation violations need to be corrected within a certain amount of time, and priority violations typically are corrected on the day of the inspection before the inspector leaves.
Kane said the department rarely closes a food establishment, and most temporary closures involve a power outage, fire or sewage backup.

The inspection scores for the week of Jan. 4 are listed below. They are all routine inspections unless otherwise noted.
■ 8 Ball Pool, 4545 Gravois Village Center, High Ridge, scored 94 on Jan. 8. Violations: food safety certifications need to be printed out and posted; and floor tiles in front of walk-in cooler in disrepair.
■ A&W, 3998 Jeffco Blvd., Arnold, scored 87 on Jan. 6. Violations: no basic food safety certificates for current employees; no staff with manager food safety certificate; employee put on gloves without washing hands; ice buildup in walk-in freezer; unused equipment stored in kitchen; and soda debris in cabinet under soda machine/stained ceiling tiles.
■ ABC Preschool, 2315 Lonedell Road, Arnold, scored 99 on Jan. 9. Violation: no thermometer in a refrigerator.
■ Aldi Foods, 2154 Michigan Ave., Arnold, was inspected on Jan. 5. No score given due to low priority.
■ Arby’s, 1181 Gravois Road, Fenton, scored 96 on Jan. 6. Violations: ice buildup in reach-in product; and dirty filters above fryers.
■ Colonial House of Festus II, 129 Gray St., Festus, scored 98 on Jan. 8. Violation: scoop handle down in sugar and coffee; and dish sink faucet leaking.
■ Dollar Tree, 2300 N. Truman Blvd., Crystal City, was inspected Jan. 6. No score due to low priority.
■ Domino’s Pizza, 2711 High Ridge Blvd., High Ridge, scored 99 on Jan. 6. Violations: door not self-closing; and ceiling tiles loose.
■ Dunkin Donuts, 1300 Veterans Blvd., Festus, scored 98 on Jan. 5. Violations: broken cooler gasket; and dusty wall above food storage unit.
■ Dylan’s Sports Bar and Grill, 675 Jeffco Blvd., Arnold, scored 92 on Jan. 7. Violations: cooling unit on dry storage rack leaking into a container; restroom doors not self-closing; stained ceiling tiles; and dusty evaporator fans/soiled ceiling vent.
■ Ginny’s Kitchen and Custards, 7022 Hwy. 61-67, Barnhart, scored 94 on Jan. 6. Violations: soiled can opener; metal pans stacked wet; racks with peeling paint/torn gasket/rust and peeling on microwave top; and peeling paint on door frame.
■ Immanuel Lutheran Christian Childcare and Preschool, 221 Brierton Lane, Crystal City, scored 96 on Jan. 7. Violations: dented cans; and drawers filled with food debris.
■ Jimmy John’s, 1300 Veterans Parkway Suite 106, Festus, had field visits on Jan. 5 and Jan. 7 regarding broken sanitizer dispenser in dish sink.
■ Johnny’s Hideout, 3367 High Ridge Blvd., High Ridge, scored 98 on Jan. 7. Violations: food safety certificates not easily accessible; and damaged weather strip on door.
■ Marcos Tacos food truck scored 97 on Jan. 9. Violation: pan stored in hand sink.
■ McDonald’s, 2701 Ridge Point Drive, High Ridge, scored 96 on Jan. 8. Violations: light missing in reach-in freezer/ice buildup in reach-in and walk-in freezer; and dusty ceiling light.
■ Mercy Multiplied, 1455 Romaine Creek Road, Fenton, scored 100 on Jan. 9.
■ Neighborhood Grocery, 306 Bailey Road, Crystal City, scored 100 on Jan. 5.
■ Papin One Stop, 3201 Papin Road, De Soto, was reinspected on Jan. 8. No score given.
■ Schnuck’s Deli, 20 Dillon Plaza, High Ridge, scored 96 on Jan. 8. Violations: soiled sheathed knife; and soiled walk-in cooler fan guards.
■ Schnuck’s Seafood, 20 Dillon Plaza, High Ridge scored 96 on Jan. 9. Violations: incorrect sanitizer solution in dish sink; and damaged cooling unit in walk-in freezer leaking water.
■ Shanty, 1663 S. Old Hwy. 141, Fenton, was inspected Jan. 7. No score given due to low priority.
