Zelda, left, and Meowth

John Gilbert said his kittens, Zelda, left and Meowth have been a pleasant addition to his family.

Meowth and Zelda, 4-month-old kittens, are a welcome addition to John and Kendall Gilberts’ De Soto home.

“They’re brother and sister,” John Gilbert said. “They’re tabbies, I think.”

Meowth, the male kitten, has a more outgoing personality, but his sister Zelda also is amiable, Gilbert said.

“He is probably one of the friendliest pets we’ve ever had,” Gilbert said. “What a snuggler! She is a little guarded, but friendly, too.”

The Gilberts took in Meowth and Zelda when they were asked to help spread the word that someone’s cat recently had a litter.

“A friend of my sister’s asked us – knowing that we have a bookstore (Books Galore in Festus) – after her cat had six kittens, if we’d ask around if anyone wanted kittens. We took these two.”

The Gilberts also own a dog, an 11-year-old spaniel-Border collie mix, Mia.

“We kind of keep the cats separated from Mia at this point,” Gilbert said. “Mia is a little territorial. We’ll integrate them later.”
