dinner rolls

Fall sports, falling leaves, and falling temperatures are three good reasons to think about doing some baking.

With kids and grownups outside enjoying soccer and other outdoor sports or raking leaves, what better way to warm them up on a chilly, autumn day than making a pot of beef stew? And, what goes better with that hearty stew than a pan of freshly baked yeast rolls?

If your appetite doesn’t draw you into the kitchen after working or playing outside, the welcoming aroma of stew and homemade rolls will.

There’s nothing like yeast rolls to dress up a meal. But not everyone has time to make them, since most recipes take three hours or longer to prepare. However, that’s not a problem anymore.

This one-hour yeast roll recipe is perfect for days when you’re short on time, but the bread is not short on flavor.

ONE-HOUR DINNER ROLLS

1 cup warm water

1/4 cup sugar

1/3 cup oil

1 packet of dry yeast

1 teaspoon salt

1 egg, beaten

3-1/3 cups flour

1/4 cup butter

1 tablespoon honey

Preheat oven to 375 degrees. In a large bowl, mix warm water, oil, sugar and yeast. Let stand 15 minutes.

Next, stir in salt and beaten egg and blend well. Gradually add flour to yeast mixture. The dough will be a little sticky, so add just enough flour to make it manageable to handle. Cover bowl with a towel and let dough rest for 10 minutes.

Spray hands with nonstick cooking spray and form dough into 12 balls. Place balls on greased cookie sheet far enough apart so they won’t touch. Let rise 10 more minutes.

Melt 1/4 cup butter, add 1 tablespoon honey and mix well. Brush tops of rolls with honey-butter mixture and bake at 375 degrees for 15 minutes or until golden brown. While still warm, brush again with honey/butter.
