Whether you’re planning a Mother’s Day celebration or a graduation party this month, you will want to serve a dessert that not only is delicious, but also is fairly easy to prepare. This recipe for Heavenly Hash Sheet Cake is both.
The cake, with all its marshmallows and nuts, will remind you of heavenly hash candy, and it will satisfy all the chocolate lovers on your guest list. This recipe dates back to the 80s, but your family and friends will find it just as tasty today as they did back then.
HEAVENLY HASH SHEET CAKE
2 cups flour
2 cups sugar
1 teaspoon salt
2 sticks margarine or butter
3 tablespoons cocoa
1 cup water
2 eggs
1 teaspoon baking soda
1/2 cup sour milk or buttermilk
In a bowl, combine flour, sugar and salt and set aside.
Place margarine or butter, cocoa and water in a medium-size saucepan and bring to a boil and pour boiling mixture over flour mixture and beat well.
Add eggs, one at a time, and beat well. Add baking soda and sour milk or buttermilk and beat well.
Pour into a greased and floured 10-by-15-inch jelly roll pan. Bake at 350 degrees for 20 minutes or until done. It is done if you insert a toothpick in the middle of the cake and it comes out clean.
ICING:
5 tablespoons milk
2 heaping cups of powdered sugar
2 tablespoons cocoa
1 teaspoon vanilla
1 cup chopped pecans or walnuts (your preference)
1 cup miniature marshmallows
Warm the milk, powdered sugar, cocoa and vanilla. Fold in the nuts and marshmallows.
Pour and spread over warm cake. Slice into squares and enjoy.
Note: You may want to put the bowl of icing in the microwave for 30 seconds before adding marshmallows and nuts to make sure it’s warm enough to melt the marshmallows just a little. If the icing seems too thick, you may add an additional tablespoon of milk. Also, I use a butter knife to swirl the icing evenly across the top of the cake, mixing the marshmallows with the chocolate.
