Time has just about run out on 2015 and the New Year is just around the corner. As the old year comes to a close, many friends and families will get together to ring in the New Year. And, of course, what is a celebration, without food?

When planning a get together, the number of guests you’re having usually determines what kind of refreshments are served. Also, the weather can play a part in the menu. Cold weather, for example, always seems to enhance appetites.

So, if you’re having a New Year’s Eve party or a New Year’s dinner, the following recipe is easy to make and is easily doubled for a larger crowd. They’re tasty, too, and are great as a snack for a party or as an appetizer with New Year’s dinner. Here’s wishing everyone a Happy New Year!

CRISPY ORIENTAL WONTONS

1 sleeve wonton wrappers

1 8-ounce package cream cheese

2-3 tablespoons white sugar

Dash of salt

4-5 green onions, chopped (both tops and bottoms)

Juice from 1/2 small fresh lemon

1/2 pound refrigerated imitation crab meat, finely chopped (optional)

Mix cream cheese with sugar, salt, chopped green onions, lemon juice and imitation crab meat (if used).

Place wonton wrappers one at a time on a small plate. Keep a small amount of water handy to wet edges of wonton wrappers.

Place one teaspoon of cream cheese mixture in center of wonton. Wet edges and fold over cream cheese mixture to look like an envelope. Drop several folded wontons at a time into hot oil. Fry for a few seconds on each side until golden brown and wontons are crisp. Recipe makes about 25 wontons if using the small wonton wrappers and the imitation crab meat and usually a few less if using only cream cheese and onions.

Note: If you have unused wonton wrappers left, keep them covered so they don't dry out.
