Seckman High School senior Devon Scott, 17, of Barnhart was a winner in the SHINE! Ultimate Prom Experience contest sponsored by the Megan Meier Foundation, which works to curb bullying in schools and the community.
Devon was one of two winners chosen from the St. Louis region.
The other winner was a girl, Alyssa Elfline of Hermann High School in Hermann.
They were chosen from among “handfuls of students,” said Evyn Brown, a foundation spokeswoman.
As a winner, Devon received a “prom package” worth about $3,000 that includes a tuxedo and shoe rental, a limo ride to and from the prom, a boutonniere for him and a corsage for his date, and dinner for him and his date, the foundation reported.
He will take his girlfriend, Seckman High sophomore Kyla Byrd, 16, of Imperial, to the prom, which is Saturday (April 26) at Orlando’s in south St. Louis County.
Devon was nominated for the contest by his older sister, Adina Scott of Fenton, who said her brother “never asks for much” and “has chosen to live the anti-bullying life and spends his time encouraging others and building others’ self esteem.”
Brown said Devon won because “he has contributed to his school and society in the fight against bullying.”
Devon is a good role model, Brown added.
“He currently works a full-time job while being involved in school and encouraging the ones around him to stand up to bullying,” she said. “We chose Devon based on his selflessness and drive to change the world around him.”
Devon said he always tries to stand up against bullying.
“It’s not right, and it’s something that shouldn’t be done,” he said.
Devon said he was surprised and pleased to win the contest.
“It’s saving me some money,” he said. “I’m more than excited (to go to the prom).”
Devon said after graduation, he plans to go to trade school to learn how to be a crane operator.
“I’m a hands-on person,” he said. “I’m always working.”
Devon works delivering hot tubs and installing pools for Two Men and a Spa Dolly in the Arnold area.
He is the son of Tina and Chuck Scott.
