First State Community Bank President Kevin Boren presented a check for $22,000 to the De Soto School District at the Dec. 20 Board of Education meeting. The money will be used toward the purchase of a commercial electronic center sign that will be constructed in front of the district’s new auditorium, 815 Amvets Drive.

The purchase of the sign at a price of $35,670 from Jewell Sign Company was approved that night by the board.

Superintendent Josh Isaacson said that a prior donation of $1,500 from the De Soto High class of 2018 left only $12,170 of the price to be paid by the district for the 4-foot by 8-foot sign. The sign will have a nonelectric component announcing the location of the auditorium, which sits between De Soto High School and De Soto Junior High School, and an electronic message board.

“It will indicate the location of the auditorium and will display information about upcoming events,” Isaacson said.

He said the sign will also have the capability of displaying emergency information originating from other sources.

He expects the sign to be constructed in the next two months, weather permitting.
