Moortell Sports Pub has opened at 120 Main St. in Pevely, in the space that previously housed a longtime tavern called the Main St. Pub.
Two couples – Jamie Portell, 48, and Tina Portell, 49, of Millstadt, Ill., and Tom Moore, 52, and Traci Moore, 51, of St. Louis County – own and operate the Moortell Sports Pub, which opened Nov. 18. Tina Portell and Tom Moore are siblings.
The pub’s name is a combination of the two couples’ names.
“The building was (the Main St. Pub) for about 25 years,” Jamie Portell said. “It’s been closed for about two years.”
He said the couples bought the 1,833-sqaure-foot building that houses Moortell Sports Pub, which has a maximum occupancy of 100.
It serves adult beverages and food.
“It’s definitely a full-service bar,” Tina Portell said. “We also have some food – sandwiches, pizzas, wings, toasted ravioli, soft pretzels, nachos. The pizzas are TJ’s Pizza.”
“We are going to have free popcorn,” Jamie Portell said.
The pub has numerous televisions for local sports fans to keep up with their favorite teams, he said.
“We will have sports on all 13 of our TVs,” Tom Moore said. “We’ll have different games on the TVs on normal days and all the TVs on the same game for special events like the Super Bowl. We have the NFL Sunday Ticket.”
Tina Portell, who oversees the day-to-day operations, said the bar offers several games to play.
“We have a pool table, dart board and golf machine game,” she said.
Moortell Sports Pub is open from 11 a.m. to 1:30 a.m. most every day.
“Depending on how busy we are, we may close a little early on a given night,” Jamie Portell said.
The bar owners said they intended to open a drinking establishment after they all retired, but when they learned the Pevely building was available for purchase, they decided to move up their plans.
“It’s our first bar,” Tom Moore said. “This was just an opportunity that came around.”
Jamie Portell said he and his business partners feel comfortable in Pevely.
“We want to be a part of the community,” he said.
