April Rhodes and her husband, Mitchell, have opened Back Rhodes Mercantile, 10661 Business 21, in Hillsboro.

The Back Rhodes Mercantile shop, which opened Jan. 8 at 10661 Business 21 in Hillsboro carries lots of out-of-the-ordinary items, co-owner April Rhodes said.

“We have all kinds of different things for different people,” she said. “We have handmade crafts and gifts. We also have boutique-style items. We offer things you don’t find in a department store.”

Rhodes, 28, and her husband, Mitchell Rhodes, 34, own the store. They also own and operate Back Rhodes Signs, a wood sign business that operates out of the same space that houses the shop.

She said Back Rhodes Mercantile already offers a wide variety of items but will expand its wares in the coming months.

“We have cornhole boards, metal signs, cups, shirts, art, candles,” Rhodes said. “In the near future, we’ll have pool cues with a pool table to test them out. We’ll have fishing lures, handmade knives. We’ll have golf equipment. We will have some furniture.”

Rhodes said she and her husband decided to open the shop after having difficulty finding vendor space to sell their wares.

“With the sign company, we’d been trying to get into other vendor shops and couldn’t find one to let us do it,” April Rhodes said. “They were all full. So, we decided to open this.”

Business hours for Back Rhodes Mercantile are 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays, 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Wednesdays and Fridays and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturdays. It is closed on Sundays and Mondays.

Rhodes said she and her husband run the business, and other family members help out.

She said she is seeking more vendors and crafters to sell items at Back Rhodes Mercantile.

The Rhodes live in Hillsboro with their four children.
