Contruction on the Dollar General, as of early February.

A Dollar General store under construction near the Buchheit store in Herculaneum is expected to open in a few weeks.

“They’re saying it should be open by the end of March, maybe the first of April,” Herculaneum City Administrator Jim Kasten said. “They’ve just about completed the outside. They have their coolers installed already, the parking lot is paved and striped. They’re getting ready to pour the foundation for their highway sign.”

Vern Bauman Contracting in Ste. Genevieve is building the 12,480-square-foot store, which sits on a 1.99-acre lot, Kasten said.

“It will be one of their bigger ones,” he said. “It will have a lot more stuff than some of the others – produce, maybe even deli. There’s lots of parking.”

Kasten said the store is expected to bring in “probably $6,000 to $10,000 a month” in sales tax.

“More would be even better,” he said. “It will be nice for us.”

He said he spoke with a former resident and Herculaneum High grad who is slated to manage the store.

“It’s not for sure yet, so I don’t want to give her name,” he said.

Kasten said the parent company that owns Dollar General has purchased the rest of the property in the triangle formed by Commercial Blvd., McNutt Road and Riverview Plaza Drive in front of the Buchheit store.

“Right now, there’s nothing else in the works,” he said. “But I don’t think they bought it to just sit vacant. It’s zoned for commercial, and it would be great if there were other retail sales there, other water users.”

Kasten said city officials are optimistic about the opportunities the complex offers but understand they need to exercise caution.

“We want to grow, but we want to grow smart.”
