The Brick Bistro & Brew closed after stormwater got into the basement today.

The Brick Bistro & Brew, 216 E. Main Street, in Festus closed this afternoon (April 25) when stormwater backed up in the basement after a day of rain.

Manager Justin Vaughn said water started coming up out of the three sewer drains in the basement around 2 p.m. The water stopped flowing out of the sewers at about 5 p.m.

“Our building sits the lowest on Main Street,” he said. “This is the second time it’s happened.”

The restaurant opened in December and had a stormwater backup in August during remodeling of the building, Vaughn said.

Water was only in the basement, which is mainly used for storage, and did not affect the dining area or kitchen upstairs, Vaughn said.

He said everything in the basement is in plastic containers and off the ground.

“It was probably an inch or 2 of water,” Vaughn said

The restaurant will be closed the rest of today and probably most of Friday (April 26), he said.

“The only reason we closed down is we had to get it taken care of,” Vaughn said.

Vaughn said the rain caused the backup.

“If it rains for a couple of days straight like it has, it just backs up,” he said.

The restaurant is owned by Cindy and Larry Rice.
