The owners of Tree of Life Home Decor & Furnishings in Festus take to heart the saying, “They don’t make ‘em like they used to.”
Michelle Hohmeier and her mother, Nancy Becker, own the store, which refurbishes old furniture and sells it, along with other items.
“People may have a piece of furniture that’s been passed down in the family they want refurbished,” she said. “You find old furniture is more stable, such as Thomasville, and they’re made of real wood. It’s better furniture.”
After the furniture is refurbished it looks great and can be counted on to last, Hohmeier said.
“If someone has a piece of furniture, we can update it,” Hohmeier said. “We can stain it and use other techniques.
“We do not reupholster furniture. We strictly work with wood. It could be a ‘70s or ‘80s or even a ‘90s piece they’re tired of looking at, and we can refurbish it.”
In addition, Tree of Life sells pieces from local artists, like turned wood bowls and boxes; bath and body items; candles and candleholders; kitchen and garden items; specialty food items and a variety of other home decor items.
Hohmeier said the store has already been prepared for the upcoming holiday season.
“We are ready for the Christmas season,” she said. “We’ll have Christmas items for sale.”
The store opened in 2019.
“We’ll be celebrating our fifth anniversary in November,” she said.
Hohmeier said she’s happy with the Tree of Life location on Festus Main Street because of the revitalization of the city’s downtown area and the events held there.
“These Main Street activities give us a livelier atmosphere,” she said. “They just get more people on Main Street.”
