After a broken water pipe led to the closure of Tree of Life Home Decor and Furnishings, 109 Main St., in Festus for most of 2023, the business is back, bigger and better, said Michelle Hohmeier, who owns the shop with her mother, Nancy Becker.

“A customer said to me, ‘It must have been devastating,’” Hohmeier said. “It was, but the Lord has blessed us with what we’ve been able to accomplish over the past 10 months. It’s so much better than it was.”

Hohmeier said she and her mother opened Tree of Life in November 2019 in what had been an office.

“Before, we were saddled with space limitations,” she said. “There were a lot of little rooms. Now with the renovation, we have a large, open space where we can display more furniture. We were given the chance to make it to be what we envisioned. Now we have the kind of space we want and don’t have to make do with the space we had.”

The store reopened in early November.

In addition to offering new and gently used furniture, Tree of Life sells work from local artists; turned wood bowls and boxes; bath and body items; candles and candleholders; lamps, kitchen and garden items; and a range of other home decor items, focusing on traditional and early American styles.

The store also has a line of specialty food items.

Tree of Life also offers refinishing of wood furniture.

“You can either bring your piece into the store or we can come and get it,” she said.

The store is open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesdays through Saturdays.

The business’ website, treeoflifefestus.com, has an extensive list of the store’s inventory.
