Summerville of St. Andrew’s in Eureka allows active adults to shed the responsibility of homeownership while also maintaining their independence.

The community for those 55 and older is being built into the hillside at 450 Summerville Blvd. Construction for the 96 homes, each featuring their own entrance and a patio, started in January 2021 and is expected to be completed in May, said lifestyle counselor Dana Wotjan.

“You are able to have the freedom of not owning a home,” she said. “You can have a brand-new patio home to live in and enjoy instead of having to deal with cleaning up your yard and regular maintenance that comes with a home. It is a place where you can have an active lifestyle.”

Summerville has one-bedroom units, two-bedroom units and units that have two bedrooms and a den. The units range in cost from $2,795 to $4,250 per month depending on location and size.

Each unit has a full-sized kitchen with appliances, living and dining areas, and the cost for cable television and Wi-Fi access is included in the monthly rent. There also is a housekeeping service provided twice a month, according to Summerville’s brochure.

Community amenities include a two-mile serpentine trail, bocce and pickleball courts, outdoor barbecue grills, shaded pergolas, a club that is available to be rented for special occasions and a social bar called Kokomo, Wotjan said. She also said Summerville is pet friendly.

“We know that our elders are more inclined to have an active-adult lifestyle,” Wotjan said. “They still want to work, be active and get together with friends. They don’t want to go somewhere to ride out time.”
