Presleys Glass offers quick fix for most foggy windows
Spring cleaning can eliminate dirt and grime from windows, but often that’s not enough. Windows may develop an opaque or foggy look, which is a much bigger deal than you might think.
“Foggy windows happen when the seals in an insulated window fail,” said Rick Presley of Presleys Glass, 1206 Thornton, in Pacific. “Sometimes it can even cause the home to fail an occupancy inspection.
“It can be a deal breaker for a sale,” he said.
It can also be costly to the homeowner.
“When the seal fails, the window no longer has that insulative value,” Presley said. “Fogged windows are something people don’t necessarily think needs to be fixed. After all, it’s not broken or cracked. But I guarantee it is costing you money.”
The most drastic (and expensive) fix is to replace the window, but Presley said often that isn’t necessary.
“It’s easier, faster and cheaper to just replace the glass,” he said. “Reglazing will cost 20 to 25 percent of what a replacement will. Typically, a window replacement will be around $700 to $900, so the reglaze would run $150 to $210, somewhere around there.”
Mess and bother are other factors. Presley said a reglazing can typically be a one-day, in-and-out project.
“You don’t have to have a contractor come and tear out drywall, that kind of thing,” he said. “It’s much cleaner and quieter and brings the window back to its original energy efficiency.”
The bottom line, Presley said, is that replacing fogged windows can make a home more energy-efficient, more comfortable, safer to live in and easier to sell.
Presley’s Glass offers new or replacement glass in commercial and residential applications, as well as shower enclosures, glass shelves and other custom work.
