Installing sod prepares lawns to look perfect for spring
Now is the perfect time to set up your lawn to look beautiful for the spring, said Trish Petrus, office manager of Gil Schroeder Sod Sales.
“October is ideal for seeding and sodding to get your yard to look fantastic before the end of fall, so you can have a fantastic lawn for the spring,” Petrus said.
Gil Schroeder Sod, 4600 Byrnesville Road in House Springs, has been owned by Gil and Linda Schroeder for more than 40 years.
Petrus said the seed planting season winds down around the middle of October, but there is still time to cover bare spots or plant more seeds in your lawn.
“We like to try to get seed on the ground by the second week of October, so it has time to germinate and establish itself before it goes into potential dormancy,” she said.
There is no clock for when sod can be put down, though.
“As long as the ground temperature is above 27 degrees, and as long as we haven’t had a lot of rain or snow, we are able to cut,” she said. “After dormancy, (sod) will not take root. It will lay there in a full state of rest until the spring, but you reap the benefit of ground cover. It just won’t be rooted firmly to the ground.”
Petrus said the company only needs a one-day notice to fill sod orders, and the product can either be picked up at the business or delivered and installed.
