Deck construction, remodeling and restoration weren’t the main offerings when Mark Hicks first started his business in 1982.

What’s now known as Everything Decks began as a home remodeling business that has since transformed into its namesake’s niche — after which the business exploded, said Hicks, 66, of De Soto.

His son Shane Hicks, a union carpenter, got involved, and that’s when Hicks said he “really switched from remodeling to decks.”

That’s been the focus for the past 15 years, he said.

Hicks said nearly 70 percent of the De Soto-based company’s clients are repeat customers.

“It’s all about reputation,” said Hicks, adding that he was 24 years old when he went into business.

Hicks said his no-money down business approach has brought in “a ton of business” over the years. Rather than having a client sign a contract and require a certain percentage down, his clients only sign an estimate.

“I absorb all of that just to give the customer peace of mind,” said Hicks, who also noted the company’s workmanship warranty and in-house pricing systems.

“I’m an old school, handshake guy,” he said.

Hicks said Everything Decks is a company based on Christian values, has an A+ rating from the Better Business Bureau and was voted a NextDoor Neighborhood Fave.

It’s also a second-generation, family owned business, he said.
