Consort Homes helps buyers prepare
Home buyers are demanding that their new homes be built with features that enhance the overall functionality, accessibility and value, and Consort Homes responded.
The home builder began working on a universal design floorplan, which makes a home accessible to all people, regardless of age or physical ability. The designers started by modifying its most popular ranch home plan to include features such as a zero-entry (no steps) garage, wider hallways and door frames and low or zero-entry showers.
While these modifications add comfort and ease, the Consort Homes plan maintains the feel of luxury and openness, company officials said.
The universal design plan has proved to be popular, Consort officials say, because many buyers see the value in preparing to be in their home for many years, even if they don’t currently have physical limitations.
The plan is not a one-size-fits-all scheme, though. According to Consort officials, buyers will sit down and talk with a staff member about desired features and structural modifications that can be made to prepare for future needs. Some of these options may include reinforced walls and additional bracing for grab bars or lift systems, specific cabinetry designs or layouts for under-counter appliances, integrated or lowered light switches or raised electric outlets.
The beauty of the plan, officials say, is these modifications can be made without making sure the outside of the home does not look modified for accessibility purposes.
