James Eli Smith, 93, of Hillsboro died Aug. 29, 2026, at his home. Mr. Smith served in the U.S. Army. He retired from the U.S. Defense Mapping Agency in St. Louis and was a member of Second Baptist Church in Festus. Born Jan. 21, 1933, in Beaumont, Texas, he was the son of the late Mary (Endsley) and Barney Smith Sr.
He is survived by his wife of 66 years: Edith (DeYoung) Smith; a son: Brian (Shannon) Smith of Hillsboro; a daughter: Angela Ashabranner of Hillsboro; and five grandchildren: Ryan, Brittany (Aaron), Zachary, Jordan and Alexcia.
He was preceded in death by a brother: Barney (the late Virginia) Smith Jr.
Visitation is scheduled from 10 a.m. until funeral services at 11 a.m. Thursday, Sept. 3, at Second Baptist Church, 723 Horine Road, in Festus, officiated by Pastor James King. Interment will follow in Sandy Cemetery in Hillsboro. Memorials may be made to Living Springs Camp. Arrangements are under the direction of Vinyard Funeral home.
