Dale E. Sherbutte, 82, of Hillsboro died July 4, 2026, at his home. At a young age, Mr. Sherbutte ran away from home and joined the circus. When he was 18, he joined the U.S. Army and was sent to Korea. While stationed overseas, he was notified that his parents were killed in a house fire. The Army sent him back to the States, and he was stationed at the Army Depot in Granite City, Ill. While there, he met his wife at a New Year's Eve party. He was known as an intelligent man who went to Bailey School of Technology and became a master mechanic. He specialized in transmissions and worked for Chrysler dealerships until he retired at 62. He was passionate about cars, including stock cars. The cars he built were raced at Pevely, Belleville and the Old St. Charles Track, where his cars are now on display. He was an avid NASCAR car fan and attended a few NASCAR races in Atlanta and Talladega, as well as watching the races on TV. He enjoyed country music, especially Hank Williams, Johnny Cash, Loretta Lynn, Willy Nelson and Patsy Cline. He loved vacationing in Florida and Gulf Shores as well as taking his pontoon out on Goose Creek. He will be remembered for being full of love, jokes and pranks that he played on family and friends, often while holding a cold can of Miller Lite in his hand. Born on Nov. 17, 1943, in Port Huron, Mich., he was the son of the late Angus and Edna Lenn Sherbutte.
He is survived by his wife: Gloria Nemeth Sherbutte, whom he married on Feb. 12, 1966, at St. Mary of Victories Catholic Church in St. Louis; a daughter: Tamara Victoria Sherbutte (Kelly Bowling) Kelsheimer; three grandsons: Samuel Theodore (Nicole) Kelsheimer, Tyler Nicholas Kelsheimer and Tiernan Ray Kelsheimer; and a granddaughter: Tiffany Marie (Mike Dankel) Kelsheimer.
Visitation is scheduled from 11 a.m. until a funeral service at 1 p.m. Saturday, July 11, at Chapel Hill Mortuary- Robert Brown Chapel, 103 Fourth St., in Hillsboro. Interment will follow in Glade Chapel Cemetery in Hillsboro. After interment, friends and family are invited to the Knights of Columbus Hall on Hwy. 21 for food and fellowship. Arrangements are under the direction of Chapel Hill Mortuary- Robert Brown Chapel.
