Daniel “Al” Hulme, age 88, De Soto, formerly of Crystal City

Daniel “Al” Hulme, 88, of De Soto, formerly of Crystal City, died June 1, 2020, at Scenic Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Herculaneum. Mr. Hulme was head of the Physical Education Department at Norberry Junior High School in Winnipeg from 1958 to 1965. Then he moved to the Twin City area and was the owner/operator of the Liberty Cafe in Crystal City, until flooding in 1973. He and his wife became American citizens in 1971. He was manager of the Commerce Bank of Festus branch on Truman Boulevard in Crystal City and retired as the bank’s vice president. He was an avid golfer, and when he lived in Canada, he spent many hours as a hockey player, hockey fan and winning basketball coach.

Born April 18, 1932, in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada, he was the son of the late Ellen (Molyneux) and Daniel Hulme.

He was preceded in death by his wife: Olive (Busko) Hulme.

He is survived by his son: Michael Hulme of Perryville; a grandson: Spencer A. Hulme of De Soto; a granddaughter: Alexandra Hulme of Pevely; two special nieces: Janet Schultz Johnson of Shawnee, Kan., and Colleen Pashia Keeling of Jacksonville, Fla.; three sisters-in-law: Ann Pashia of Jacksonville, Fla., Alexandra Brenneis of Edmonton, Alberta, Canada, and Julia (Tom) Madden of Cornwall, Ontario, Canada.

He also was preceded in death by two sisters: Mary Ethel Long and Gladys May Hulme; and a brother: George Frederick (the late Margueritte) Hulme.

Graveside services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday (June 3) at the Presbyterian/Methodist Cemetery on Lee Avenue in Festus, officiated by the Rev. Jack King of Good News Community Church in Festus. Memorials may be made to the Festus Public Library or the Good News Community Church. Arrangements are under the direction of Vinyard Funeral Home in Festus.
