Brett, 64, of Barnhart said he loves the photo he submitted, which he took in July of his 1-year-old granddaughter, Molly Young of Pevely. They’d just bought her a bubble gun, and she was mesmerized by the bubbles while sitting on the front porch with her grandmother, Julie.

“The bubbles seemed to overwhelm her,” Brett said.

Brett’s photo was picked as the best among 208 entries. Photos were judged on composition, charm and technical aspects, like crop, focus and lighting.

Brett will receive a $100 cash prize. He plans to give the money to Molly’s parents, Brayden and Megan, for Molly.

The second-place prize of $50 went to Gene Helton, 73, of Eureka, who submitted a picture he took of his granddaughters, Reagan and Peyton Flora.

Gene Helton, 73, of Eureka earned second place with a picture he took of his granddaughters, Reagan and Peyton Flora, dressed up for Halloween.

“This photo perfectly captures the playfulness of my twin granddaughters as they get ready for Halloween (as Little Red Riding Hood and the wolf),” Gene said. “I have lots of pictures of them, but this one melts my heart.”

He said he will give the prize money to the 7-year-old girls, who are the daughters of Hillary and Scott Flora of Eureka.

The third-place prize of $25 went to Jeff Stieren, 63, of Eureka for a photo he took last summer of his grandson, Wade Austin Graville of House Springs, who will turn 3 in April.

Jeff Stieren, 63, of Eureka snagged third place with a picture he took last summer of his grandson, Wade Austin Graville of House Springs, who will turn 3 in April.

Jeff said they were in the kitchen when the idea for the photo just kind of arose.

“He was grabbing for the spaghetti, but it was too hot at the time,” Jeff said.

After the noodles cooled off, Jeff staged the picture.

“He was loving it,” Jeff said.

Wade is the son of Kyle and Johannah Graville and has a younger brother.

“Wade is one of the happiest kids I know,” Jeff said. “He loves being loved. He always cheers up our days when he visits us. What joy he has brought to our lives.”

The contest for seniors, 50 years and older, began in 2004.
