The Missouri State Treasurer’s Office had its Unclaimed Property list published in the West Side Leader this year, but not the Jefferson County Leader or Arnold-Imperial Leader.
However, Leader readers may still view the Unclaimed Property list in the June 27 West Side Leader e-Edition on the Leader website at myleaderpaper.com or on the treasurer’s website at showmemoney.com. Missouri State Treasurer Vivek Malek said one in 10 Missourians have unclaimed money, adding that the state has nearly 300,000 unclaimed property accounts. The listings include unclaimed properties worth more than $50.
According to the Missouri State Treasurer’s Office, state law requires financial institutions, insurance companies, governmental agencies and many businesses to turn over unclaimed assets to the office after several years of no activity on accounts. The assets include cash from bank accounts; stocks and bonds; utility refunds and the contents of abandoned safe deposit boxes.
The vast majority of unclaimed property is cash or the equivalent, but the state also has many items from safety deposit boxes, ranging from valuable jewelry to historical books and documents.
If property goes unclaimed for several years, it is subject to public auction. This year’s Unclaimed Property Auction will be held July 29-30, starting at 9 a.m. each day, with previews starting on July 28. The auction location is the Oasis Hotel & Convention Center, 2546 North Glenstone Ave., in Springfield.
