October brings cooler weather, busy school days, fall activities and the start of holiday planning. It’s also a good time to think about something that can easily get overlooked in our day-to-day routines: prevention.

Most of us would rather not spend a week home sick, miss an important school event or cancel plans with family and friends because illness has made its way through the household. But prevention is about more than avoiding inconvenience. It’s one of the ways we look out for the people around us.

Prevention doesn’t have to be complicated.

Washing your hands, covering coughs and sneezes, improving indoor ventilation, staying home when you’re sick and keeping up with recommended vaccinations can all help reduce the spread of illness. If you’re feeling under the weather, taking a break from gatherings or other activities might be disappointing, but it could make a real difference for someone else.

No single action can prevent every illness, and none of us can avoid every germ. But we can all do our part to lower the risk and look out for one another.

As the holidays approach, let’s make room for a little extra consideration. Whether you’re heading to work, sending the kids to school, visiting loved ones or gathering with friends, remember that protecting your health can also help protect someone else’s.
