De Soto Board of Education member Nicole Spruell resigned from the school board on Feb. 28. However, she already had filed to seek re-election to the school board on April 2, and her name remains on the ballot.
Superintendent Josh Isaacson said Spruell’s resignation from the board took effect on March 5, when the board accepted her resignation during a special board meeting.
Spruell, who was absent from that meeting, was elected to a one-year term on the board in April 2023. She filed to seek one of the two three-year school board seats up for election this April. Also running for the board seats are incumbent Bevely Wilson and Joseph Smart.
Spruell cited personal reasons for her need to resign from the board but indicated her situation could change by the April election, which would allow her to accept the seat if she were to win.
Her resignation letter was addressed to Wilson, the board president.
“I am writing to officially resign from my position as a member of the De Soto #73 School Board, effective immediately,” she said. “After much consideration, I have come to the difficult decision that I must step down from this role.
“It has been an honor and privilege to serve on the De Soto #73 School Board over the past year. I am proud of the work we have accomplished together in supporting the students, families, and staff of our School District. However, due to personal reasons, I will be resigning from this position at this time.
“I want to express my gratitude to my fellow Board members for their dedication and collaboration during my tenure. I have learned a great deal from each of you and have valued our discussions and shared commitment to our educational mission.
“I will continue to support the important work of the Board and remain dedicated to the success of our School District.”
Spruell, 39, is a teacher for the Mehlville School District. She has a bachelor’s degree in physical education and health with a minor in coaching from Lindenwood University, a master’s degree in curriculum and instruction from Southwest Baptist University and an education specialist in superintendency and educational administration degree from Southwest Baptist University.
