Construction crews will begin work Monday, July 27, on a 1-mile stretch of Saline Road in the Jefferson County portion of Fenton. The crew will widen the road, install guardrails and extend existing box culverts.
Jefferson County Public Works Director Jason Jonas said there will be a lane closure, with flagging operations, on Saline Road to allow crews to complete the work. The road will be fully open to traffic outside of active working hours, Jonas said.
Public Works selected N.B. West Contracting in Pacific to complete the project in a maximum of 78 working days. Jonas said the company’s schedule tentatively indicates completing the project around Dec. 1.
N.B. West will be paid $2,399,002.32 and was the lowest of two bids for the project.
A federal grant will cover 70 percent, or $1,679,301.62, of the project costs, and the remaining 30 percent, or $719,700.70, will be paid using the county’s share of a countywide 1/2-cent sales tax for road and bridge improvements.
Once work is complete, the stretch of road, from Northwest Boulevard to the 1900 block of Saline Road, will have 4-foot-wide paved shoulders, edge line and centerline rumble strips and guardrails where necessary.
New driveway pipes will be installed, and three existing box culverts along the road will be extended. Rock will be placed around the culverts to help prevent erosion. The road will receive a new asphalt overlay along with striping and updated signage.
This portion of Saline Road lies between Hwy. 30 and Hwy. 141 and includes numerous neighborhoods with single-family homes.
About 4,780 vehicles drive this section of the road daily, according to a Public Works report.
